Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy
Precision surgery for localized cancers
Radical prostatectomy involves removing the entire prostate gland when localized cancer is diagnosed in a patient in good general health. Performed using the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot, it offers a more precise, less invasive procedure, with faster recovery than traditional open surgery.
⚠️ This treatment is generally offered to patients with intermediate- or high-risk localized cancer, whose life expectancy is at least 10 years.
💡 Thanks to robotics, erectile nerves and sphincters can be better preserved, limiting the risk of side effects.
Benefits
The advantages of robot-assisted surgery
✔ Extreme precision of the surgical gesture thanks to 3D HD vision
✔ Millimetric incisions, less post-operative pain
✔ Less blood loss, faster recovery
✔ Better preservation of erectile nerves and urinary continence
✔ Short hospital stay and rapid return home
How it works
Procedure
1️⃣ General anaesthesia (duration : 2 to 3 hours)
2️⃣ Minimally invasive incisions in the abdomen
3️⃣ Robot-assisted dissection of the prostate and seminal vesicles
4️⃣ Vesico-urethral anastomosis (reconnection of the bladder to the urethra)
5️⃣ Placement of a urinary catheter for 7 to 10 days
📌 Hospitalization for 1 to 2 days, depending on recovery
Who should undergo robot-assisted radical prostatectomy?
This procedure is particularly indicated for men:
- with localized prostate cancer (stages T1-T2) at intermediate or high risk;
- with a life expectancy of more than 10 years, in order to benefit from curative treatment;
- in good general condition, with no major contraindications to general anaesthesia;
- seeking radical treatment with the best possible preservation of continence and erectile function;
- motivated for rigorous post-operative monitoring (7-10 day probe, follow-up consultations).
Robotic prostatectomy or other treatments?
Criteria | Da Vinci robot | Open surgery | Radiotherapy |
---|---|---|---|
Anaesthesia | General | General | None |
Treatment time | 2-3 h | 2-3 h | 30-40 sessions |
Hospitalization | 1-2 days | 5-7 days | Outpatient |
Continence preservation | Good (70-90%) | Variable | Good (deferred risk) |
Preservation of erection | Good if nerves preserved | Less good | Often impaired |
