REZUM - Steam thermotherapy
Introduction
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) affects more than one in two men over the age of 50, and can lead to frequent urination, weak stream or interruptions. REZUM is a minimally invasive technique that uses the natural energy of steam to reduce prostate volume and provide lasting relief from urinary symptoms.
⚠️ If left untreated, BPH can significantly impair quality of life and lead to complications (acute retention, infections, renal failure).
💡 Good news: REZUM offers an effective alternative to chronic drug treatments and more extensive surgery.
What is REZUM treatment?
Using a millimetric needle inserted endoscopically, micro-injections of 103°C steam are delivered directly into the prostatic lobes; the heat released selectively destroys the cells responsible for urinary obstruction.
📌 In just a few minutes, the steam condenses and releases its energy; the treated tissue is then naturally resorbed by the body in 2 to 6 weeks.
What disorders are covered?
REZUM is indicated for patients with :
- A prostate adenoma measuring 30 to 80 cm³ ;
- Moderate to severe urinary symptoms (IPSS ≥ 13);
- Poor tolerance or failure of medications (alpha-blockers, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors);
- The desire to avoid major surgery (TURP, laser, etc.).
Benefits
Why choose REZUM treatment?
- Minimally invasive procedure without external incision
- Preservation of erectile function and ejaculation*.
- Outpatient treatment: return home the same day
- Rapid recovery; back to work within a few days
- Lasting reduction in urinary symptoms (IPSS improvement > 50%)
- Can be performed even on mild anticoagulants (subject to anaesthetic validation)
* Transient retro-ejaculation is possible in <5% of cases.
How it works
How does the procedure work?
- 1️⃣ Local anesthesia or brief sedation
- 2️⃣ Introduction of a flexible cystoscope through the urethra
- 3️⃣ Release of 6 to 10 water vapor pulses in each lobe
- 4️⃣ Removal of device and insertion of probe 3-5 days
- 📌 Duration: 10 - 15 min
- 🏥 Hospitalization: outpatient (same-day discharge)
